Author of books including Hardboiled America (1981), Dream Time: Chapters from the Sixties (1988), The Phantom Empire (1993), The Browser's Ecstasy: A Meditation on Reading (2000), Sonata for Jukebox: An Autobiography of My Ears (2004), The Fall of the House of Walworth (2010), and Stolen Glimpses, Captive Shadows: Writing on Film 2002-2012 (2013); six collections of poetry most recently Early Autumn (2010). Editor-in-chief, The Library of America. General editor, Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. Contributor to The New York Review of Books, Film Comment, and other periodicals.
