The State of Publishing

What does the state of publishing in New York look like? A decade after the financial crash dented both publishing houses and traditional book retailers, how are books today being bought and sold--and what does the future hold for the printed word? Join us for an evening of conversation about the current state and future of publishing, with veteran publisher/editors Mitzi Angel and Tim Duggan, and agent Zoë Pagnamenta.

Mitzi Angel is publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Previously, she was publisher of Faber and Faber in London. The authors she has worked with include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, David Bellos, Rachel Cusk, Garth Greenwell, John Lanchester, Ben Lerner, Yiyun Li, Sally Rooney, and Siddartha Mukherjee. In 2011 she was joint winner (along with Lydia Davis) of the French-American Foundation Prize for her translation of 03 by Jean-Christophe Valtat.

Tim Duggan is publisher and editor of Tim Duggan Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. The authors he has worked with include Daniel Mendelsohn, Annie Dillard, Michael Kinsley, William Boyd, Madeleine Albright, Timothy Snyder, Uzodinma Iweala, and Peter Hessler. His books include winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and multiple finalists for the National Book Award. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the advisory board of the London Book Fair.

Zoë Pagnamenta is the founder of The Zoë Pagnamenta Agency. Previously, she was the director of the New York office of the London-based Peters, Fraser & Dunlop, and an agent at The Wylie Agency in both New York and London. Her authors have won Bancroft, Ondaatje, Samuel Johnson and Pulitzer Prizes, Cullman Center and Guggenheim Fellowships, PEN and Whiting Awards.
